Official Statement

27 July 2006,

The Statement of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Athens in condemning the brutal invasion of the Zionist Regime against the defenseless people of Lebanon and Palestine

In spite of two weeks passing from the brutal and widespread attacks of military forces of Zionist regime against the defenseless people of Lebanon and civil and economic infrastructure of this country, regretfully we are still observing the negligence of international community i.e. the latest Rome Conference regarding the stop of this humanitarian disaster. With more regret, the Security Council of the United Nation, which is directly responsible for establishing peace and global security and preventing invasion and aggression has not taken any concrete action to stop this widespread invasion.

There have been scattered incidents between Hezbollah forces and the Zionist regime during the past couple of years, but widespread attack to Gaza strip, arresting Ministers and members of Palestine parliament and after the major attacks to Lebanon, killing innocent people, and destruction of infrastructures of that country is not only pre-planned program but also express a full confidence of this regime to possess full support of the Government of the United States and lack of effective actions of Security Council of the United Nation. It is apparent that this Regime has exploited the captivity of two Israeli soldiers as an excuse for revenge and increasing the tension in the region. This is happening while more than ten thousands of Palestinians and hundreds of Lebanese are living in Israeli's prisons and the captivity of some of them dates back to more than twenty years but regretfully we are only witnessing the silence and ignorance of international organizations for their freedom.

The Blind attacks of the occupier regime to civilian homes and directly aiming at innocent and civilians and destruction of political, economic and social structures of Lebanon and Palestine is a clear instance of breach of international conventions and rules. However it is not strange to witness such violations from a regime, whose bases are built upon occupation and repeatedly breaks resolutions of Security Council. With no doubt, this double standard act and neglecting the lives of innocent people of Lebanese and Palestinian will only expand the hate and repugnance of global society and awaked consciences and will expand insecurity and violence in the sensitive region of Middle East.

Regretfully, in order to get ride of the current critical situation and tarnishing the positive role of Iran among Arab and Muslim nations, the Zionist regime circles have tried to connect this crisis to the Iranian nuclear energy program through baseless propaganda. However the Israeil has intentionally started this crisis to achieve its fateful goals and refused to stop it so far. The Islamic Republic of Iran in order to stop this crisis has persuaded an active diplomacy and its high-ranking officials have met and discussed with officials of other countries in the region, European Union member states, and international and regional organizations as well. The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to continue its efforts in this respect.

It is vitally essential in the current critical situation that international community immediately acts according to its responsibilities to stop this tragic disaster. The Zionist regime should be announced responsible for its brutal invasions and required arrangement should be undertaken to assist injured people and also retrieving the damages and compensation for Lebanon and Palestine.

At the end, with expressing deep concern for the continuation of this crisis, we strongly alert the possibility of widespread humanitarian crisis in Lebanon if Security Council of the United Nation and other related bodies like European Union remain silent and not to act vigorously to stop this tragedy. We are insistently requesting the global efforts of awaked consciences to stop this brutal attacks against innocent people of Lebanon and Palestine.
